Contemplation and Mission
There is a profound identification between the charism of our Institute and the biblical passage of the appearance of the Risen Christ to the disciples of Emmaus (cf. Lk 24:13-35), an identification that inspired the very name of the Institute.
According to the biblical text, two disciples of Jesus, leaving Jerusalem, are heading towards the village of Emmaus, disheartened by his death. The Lord appears to them, accompanies them on the way without being recognized by them, and in the face of their desolation explains to them everything that the Scriptures, from Moses and the Prophets, refer to regarding the necessity of his suffering so that he might enter into his glory (cf. Lk 24:26).
Invited to stay with them in the village, the Lord accompanies them, sits at the table with them, takes the bread, pronounces the blessing, breaks it, and gives it to them. At that moment, their eyes are opened, they recognize Him, and He becomes invisible. They then remember that their hearts burned within them while the Lord was with them on the road, explaining the Scriptures to them. At that moment, they set off back to Jerusalem to announce to their brothers what had happened, hearing from them that Christ had risen and appeared to Simon; and they also recount to them their experience with the Lord on the road.
Just as the two disciples contemplated the face of the Lord in the breaking of bread and went to announce Him to their brothers, we, the Friars of Emmaus, have the charism of contemplating the Risen Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist and announcing Him to men thirsting for God, thus bringing His presence, the meaning of life, leading them, in turn, to recognize all His Lordship, His Sublime Divinity at the Eucharistic Table.
Article 1 – §2 (Rule of Life) – The Institute of the Friars of Emmaus has as its principal charism to identify itself with the disciples on the road to Emmaus, desiring to adore the Risen Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, and to bring Him to men thirsting for God.
§3 (Rule of Life) – The Charism of the Institute of the Friars of Emmaus is based on the experience of conventual community life, prayer, contemplation, and work.
Our goal is to carry out pastoral service in the Church for the greater glory of God, both in parish communities and in missionary outreach, dedicating ourselves to the formation of pastoral agents and Christian leaders for the good of His people.
